Blast From the Past - Buchi Emecheta
Buchi Emecheta(1944- ) Author - in the '70's.
Her books mainly focus on women's issues, particularly the theme of gender bias in both immigrant and African societies. Other themes include racial prejudice and the experience of immigration. Now with over 20 books to her credit, she published her first book 'In the Ditch' in 1972.
Born in Lagos, she attended Methodist Girls High School Yaba. She was married at 16 and in 1962 she moved to London to join her husband. In 1966 her marriage broke up and she found herself raising five kids alone. To get by she took on a number of jobs and wrote in her spare time. She was also able to gain Bachelors and Doctorate degrees from London University. Emecheta has been a visiting Professor at Yale University, Rutgers University, the University of California, Los Angeles ,University of Illinois and the University of Calabar. In 2005 she was awarded an OBE.
